Paperhand Puppet Project's New Show Celebrates Ocean Guardians
This summer, immerse yourself in the magical world of the Paperhand Puppet Project as they present The Gift, a vibrant celebration of art, connection, and environmental stewardship. After captivating audiences in North Carolina for 25 years, the nonprofit performing arts organization is proud to deliver a brand-new production that combines storytelling with a deep-rooted appreciation for our natural world.
A Sensory Experience for All Ages
Running from August 15 through September 28 at the historic Forest Theatre on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill, followed by performances from November 7–9 at the Diana Wortham Center in Asheville, The Gift promises audiences an unforgettable experience filled with hand-crafted puppets, illuminated creatures, and live music. Audiences can look forward to seeing larger-than-life characters like a 60-foot Ocean Goddess and playful beavers come to life under the spotlight, guided by a talented ensemble of 30 performers.
Understanding Our Impact on Nature
Co-founder and executive director Donovan Zimmerman shares his vision for the project, noting, "Stories move like water. They are both powerful in every direction, giving life or sometimes causing harm." Through the art of puppetry, Paperhand inspires discussions about our relationship with the environment, celebrating women who are champions of our oceans and waterways, including inspiring figures like Dr. Crystal Cavalier-Keck and Elaine Chiosso.
Building Community Through Art
The Paperhand Puppet Project emphasizes its mission to create connections through art, nurturing our humanity and encouraging mindfulness when relating to the world around us. As you witness the magic unfold, you'll be reminded of the importance of protecting our environment and connecting with those around us.
